Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 28, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how My Hero's Journey ("the app," "we," "us") handles information when you use it.
1. Who we are
My Hero's Journey is developed and maintained by Morten Lyngeng, an independent developer based in Norway. If you have questions about this policy or how your information is handled, you can reach out at post@myherosjourney.net.
2. What information we collect
Your name. When you first open the app, we ask for a name so the app can greet you personally at key moments. This is stored only on your device and is never transmitted anywhere.
Your journeys and reflections. Everything you write in the app — your journeys, stages, reflections, and the figures (allies, mentors, antagonists) you create — is stored locally on your device using Apple's on-device data framework. We do not operate a server database of your personal content, and we cannot read what you've written unless you choose to use the AI reading feature described below.
Content you send for an AI-generated reading (optional feature). If you choose to generate an AI-powered reading of your journey ("Mythic Interpretation" or "Strengthening the Story"), the relevant reflection text, the names and archetypes of any figures you've added, and related story-structure data are sent securely to our backend service, which forwards them to Anthropic's Claude API to generate your personalized reading. This only happens when you explicitly request a reading. The reading itself is then stored back on your device, not on our servers.
Technical information for abuse prevention. Our backend service temporarily processes your device's IP address to enforce a rate limit (a cap on how many AI readings can be requested per hour), preventing abuse of the service. This is stored briefly in a short-lived counter and is automatically deleted after the rate-limit window expires. We do not use IP addresses for any other purpose, and we do not build any profile tied to your IP address over time.
Purchase information. If you buy anything through the app (such as additional AI readings), the purchase is handled entirely by Apple through the App Store's In-App Purchase system. We do not receive or store your payment card details, billing address, or Apple ID. We may receive confirmation that a purchase was made, but not the payment details themselves.
We do not collect: your email address (unless you choose to email us directly), your location, your contacts, analytics about your individual usage patterns, or any advertising identifiers. We do not show ads, and we do not sell or share your information with advertisers.
3. How we use this information
We use the information described above only to:
- Provide the app's core functionality (storing your journeys and reflections on your device)
- Generate AI readings when you request them
- Prevent abuse of the AI reading service through rate limiting
- Respond to you if you contact us directly
4. Third-party services we rely on
To provide the AI reading feature, we rely on the following third-party services, each of which processes data according to their own privacy practices:
- Cloudflare, which hosts the backend service that receives your reading requests and applies rate limiting.
- Anthropic, whose Claude API generates the text of your AI reading based on the content you submit.
- Apple, which processes any in-app purchases and provides the on-device storage framework your journeys are saved with.
None of these services receive your name, your device's full journey history, or any information beyond what's needed to process a single reading request or purchase.
5. Data retention
Your journeys, reflections, and figures remain on your device for as long as you keep the app installed, or until you delete a specific journey within the app. Deleting a journey or uninstalling the app removes this content; we have no server-side copy to delete, because none exists.
Content submitted for an AI reading is processed to generate your response and is not retained by our backend service as a persistent record tied to you. Rate-limiting counters are automatically deleted after their short time window expires.
6. International data transfers
Because Cloudflare and Anthropic are based in the United States, content you submit for an AI reading may be processed on servers outside Norway and the European Economic Area. Both companies maintain their own data protection and security frameworks for handling data from EEA users. If you have concerns about this, you can use the app fully without ever triggering this transfer simply by not using the AI reading feature — all other functionality remains entirely on-device.
7. Your rights
If you are in the European Economic Area, you have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data, and the right to object to or restrict certain processing. Because nearly all of your content lives on your own device under your own control, you can exercise most of these rights directly within the app at any time — by editing, deleting, or removing a journey. For anything else, including questions about data sent for an AI reading, contact us at post@myherosjourney.net and we will respond as required by applicable law.
8. Children's privacy
My Hero's Journey is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can address it.
9. Security
Data transmitted to our backend service for AI readings is encrypted in transit. Your locally stored journeys and reflections are protected by the same security measures Apple provides for on-device app data.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time as the app evolves — for example, as new features are added. We'll update the "Last updated" date above when we do. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the updated policy.
11. Contact
Questions about this policy or your data can be sent to post@myherosjourney.net.
